I was intrigued by the inherent assymetry of the 12-bar blues and fascinated by the seemingly inifite directions that the deceptively simple form can take. In Blue Maze, I take my own spiky blues tune and allow it to lead me through a maze of transformations. In the first section, I intriduce the tune against a constantly shifting metrical background. In the second section, different members of the orchestra have the opportunity to "solo." In the final section, the tune appears for the first time in a constant metrical background as the orchestra dances to the end in a lilting waltz in blue.
Blue Maze was premiered by the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra (Marin Alsop, artistic director) in August 2007.
